For our happiness, we got back to talking to a Finnish band, something that we had missed knowing that there are fantastic talents and people who treat metal with due care, respect and competence. interviewees follow this requirement to the fullest. The Conservative Storm in its 902 Interview with Band Cataleptic. They introduce us to their third album entitled The Tragedy. The consecrated mix of Doom and Death Metal, but made from the perspective of a place that puts metal as its crown of king or queen. In this case, king because they are all guys.Band is this:Sami Livonen on Guitar & Vocals,Thomas Kulmbacher on Guitar,Tami Luukkonen on Bass and Juha Karjalainen on Drums.Sami answer our questions.Something that you will follow in all your emotions. But, first, let’s go to their song.

TC 1:Talking about the composition work in The Tragedy?

Sami Livonen:The tragedy was composed, as all earlier albums by me and Juha Karjalainen. But this time, we collaborated more together than before. And this time also, we arranged the compositions more as a group. We have new members on this album: Tami Luukkonen & Thomas Kulmbacher, who made it possible to arrange the songs more on the fly in the rehearsals. With our old members this was not possible. This is more of a band album than ever before.

TC 2:Which philosophers inspire the band on this album but as a whole?

Sami Livonen:Especially great minds from antiquity have always been an influence of mine. ”Death is a debt which every one of us must pay.” — Euripides, 480-406 BC, Ancient Greek tragedian, Alcestis ”The world is a stage, life is a passage. You came, you saw, you departed. Democritus, 470-370 BC, Ancient Greek philosopher ”Soon, you will forget everything, and soon everybody will forget you.” Marcus Aurelius, 121-180 AD, Roman Emperor , Meditations VII, 21 ”The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself; to be conquered by yourself is of all things most shameful and vile.” Plato, 427-347 BC, Ancient Greek philosopher ”Great men have the whole earth for their tomb.” Thucydides, 460-394 BC, Ancient Greek historian.

TC 3:What emotional elements did you want to bring to this album?

Sami Livonen:Rage. Perseverance. Strength to do what must be done.

TC 4:I really like the classic Doom practiced by the band, but are there elements of sludge or stoner in their structures?

Sami Livonen:No.

TC 5:Why the band have this name?

Sami Livonen:We found in dictionary when we were a lot younger. We were big fans of Katatonia and picked a word close to catatonic. No bigger meanings there. It just felt suitable 18 years ago.

TC 6:What´s band mean with Omega Campaign?

Sami Livonen:First song is called “Alpha Strike”, last song “To Burn This World Omega Campaign”. We wanted to tie the album together with Greek alphabets first and last letters, Alpha and Omega. Omega meaning also that this is the last campaign set to burn the whole world and leave only burning remains.

TC 7:What kinds of tragedies do you here want to deal with? The tragedies we see in literature or our daily tragedies?

Sami Livonen:Tragedy means here a stage play, tragedy or comedy was another style in ancient Greece. This album is The Tragedy meaning that it is the ultimate tragic stage play, where the stage is the whole world.

TC 8:The band also somewhat tackles the theme of war. But what kind of wars do they inspire?

Sami Livonen:We are inspired by ancient warfare. Where men hacked through each other with blades and screamed in agony when a spear pierces through them. Plains fill with men and horse. Thundering roar, bronze gleaming in the sun.

TC 9:How is Cataleptic different from your previous bands?

Sami Livonen:Cataleptic is the music that me and Juha wanted to listen and make since we were teenagers. No strict genre limits, just the music that comes from us naturally. All of us have played in different styles of bands, Death Metal, Death / Doom, Black Metal, etc but this is different to all of them.

TC 10:How band arrive to F.D.A Records?

Sami Livonen:We had already recorded the album. Then we sent emails to different labels, Rico from FDA Records was immediately interested in the description of our album, listened to it, and liked it. He signed us shortly after that.

TC 11:What´s the idea behind artwork´s album?

Sami Livonen:To visualize the story of the album. An ancient helmet, sword, and a skull pierced by the sword as in the background the flames of the end the world are burning.

TC 12:What kind of subject don´t deserve a Cataleptic Song?

Sami Livonen:Our concepts have always been based on strength, war, revenge, self awareness and self improvement. So promoting values as weakness, peace and forgiveness are not for us.

TC 13:What would be the ideal dark world for the band?

Sami Livonen:The world of Conan the Barbarian except there is no sun.

TC 14:This album is conceptual?yes or no and why?

Sami Livonen:Yes. Set in ancient times, the album tells a tragic story of a champion of the battlefield, his disgrace, enslavement, escape and retaliation against life itself, starting the age of fire. Why? Because I can.

TC 15:The band feel differences between Forward and now in The Tragedy?

Sami Livonen:The arrangements of the compositions in Forward suffered a lot for lack of rehearsal. We played The Tragedy’s songs a lot more on rehearsals, during which the songs changed a lot. The Tragedy was also produced a lot more during recording. For example, during Forward, I recorded my singing alone after work in our rehearsal place. With The Tragedy, me, Juha and our producer, Matti Mäkelä were present during the recording. The first time we used an outside producer. And they pushed me harder to my limits. This was the case with all recording sessions of The Tragedy. And it can really be heard on the album.

TC 16:Message to the fans, guys.the interview is over.

Sami Livonen:Greetings from Finland! Thanks for the interview, interesting questions. Listen to the album on Bandcamp/Spotify and buy through FDA Records.
